Visit of a Legend

Saturday, March 17 saw another very successful visit to Ipswich by Peter Nicol, this time accompanied by ex-Head Pro Arthur Gaskin. There was a lot to live up to after hugely popular events last year and the pair did not disappoint.

An afternoon of junior and senior clinics was very much appreciated, both Peter and Arthur getting very involved in the sessions to pass on a bit of advice and lots of enthusiastic encouragement.

Four players took up the Play a Pro Challenge (which really should be subtitled Ritual Humiliation on a Squash Court), Dick Partridge, Mick Castleton, Adrian Howell and Denis Groualle. As always these games were great fun, with the challengers eager to come off court knowing they had given of their best, and hopefully managed to take a point or two off one of the greatest players this country has ever produced. An interesting twist this year was that Peter played Denis at Racketball, the first time that has made it into a Nicol day. Peter clearly is a fan of the game, something he referred to later in the Q&A session.

The main event of the day was of course the exhibition match between Peter and Arthur. There was a lot to live up to after last year's match that no less a player than Daryl Selby described as one of the best matches he had ever seen! And it lived up to the billing. The large crowd of course was delighted to see Arthur back, fresh from his victory in the Irish National Championships and back on the World Tour. With a 100% record against Peter he had a lot to lose and he got off to a great start, winning the first game and always just managing to keep his nose in front, eventually winning an exhausting encounter 12-10 in the fifth.

The crowd were delighted; they had a great day, either watching or taking part in the clinics. Peter, as always, was a perfect gentleman, happily sharing his enormous talent with Club members. Arthur was in great shape having been working hard in the run up to his first big tournaments and his many friends in Ipswich wish him well.
