In January 2015 a month or so after losing my wife Ruth and mummy to Lydia, I decided to run the Ipswich Half Marathon to raise enough money to buy a park bench in her memory.  Family and friends wanted to join me in the run.  The running group grew to 52 people and together we raised £18,500 which purchased the bench and the remainder went to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Now Ipswich is lucky enough to have a new format half marathon called the Great East Run.  I decided to run the Half Marathon again which is on Sunday, 24 September 2017.

To date we have 100 runners committed (family and friends) to the complete the 13.1 mile run and help raise much needed funds for the Brain Tumour Charity.  Ruth is missed by me, my daughter, family and friends.  Click here for the article in the Ipswich Star.

Running for Ruth is about keeping Ruth close in our hearts whilst helping others that are in need of treatment.  We need a cure, our fundraising can only help.

Donations can be made via this link: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Running-For-Ruth.

Thank you for your support.

Local girl ‘Braves the Shave’ for MacMillan Cancer Support and Little Princess Trust

Hannah Bigley, of Carlton Way, Ipswich and daughter of Club Member Philip Bigley, is joining thousands of people Braving The Shave to stand proudly alongside men, women and children with cancer.  Hannah says: ‘Cancer doesn’t just affect your body; it affects your whole life and the lives of people around you.  I've been umming and ahhing about Brave The Shave for almost a year now.  My friend recently braved it and that was the inspiration I needed to pluck up the courage and do it myself.  My hair is my favourite part of me; doing this will be absolutely terrifying but it's for such a good cause.  I’m also donating my hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer or other illnesses.  I'm doing this to support all of my loved ones who have ever been through cancer, or are fighting cancer right now; I'm doing it for those who have ever had to see their loved ones fighting cancer; but, most importantly, I’m Braving The Shave in honour of all the people in this world who don't have a choice when they lose their hair.’

The money Hannah raises will allow MacMillan Cancer Support to be there now and in the future for even more people and families living with cancer, to help them take back control of their lives and feel like themselves again.  For more information or to make a donation please visit Hannah’s donation page at

Club Manager, Andy Yorke joined over 26,000 cyclists in London for the 2017 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 mile event on Sunday, 30 July 2017.

The event was set up after the London 2012 Olympics as a legacy event and sees thousands of would be cyclists take on the Olympic 100 mile course through Surrey’s iconic Leith Hill and Box Hill sections, passing a number of London landmarks along the way.

Andy was motivated to complete the 100 mile ride for his mother, Anne, who sadly suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease and is in a residential/nursing home in the Midlands.

Despite 2 flat tyres and colliding with a wayward spectator, Andy was pleased to complete the course passing the finishing line on The Mall in 6 hours and 45 minutes.

A number of other Club members have since confirmed they completed the course: congratulations to the management team at Seven, headed by Warwick Dunnett and also to Henry Gaskin who completed the course in a very respectable 5 hours without a single stop!

A big thank you to the various members, friends, family and colleagues who sponsored Andy who raised a fantastic £650.00 for the Alzheimer's Society.

Our next member charity event is on Sunday, 6 August 2017 with a sponsored head shave!

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

Thanks once again to all those who supported me on my Saturday stroll around Yorkshire.  It was a gorgeous day although too hot for a really fast time.  Fortunately we started early and did the first two peaks while there was still some early mist but by the time we reached Whernside it was 29C at the bottom and even 25C on top!  A lot of people just didn't make it - it's called a 'Challenge' for a reason.  However a good group slowly formed up front and our pace-man dragged us round in a very respectable 9 hours 13 minutes.  I'm happy with that.  Through your support we have raised over £400 for the Futures Fund.

This year we are helping Club Member Lucy Turmel with her trip to the Squash World Championships in New Zealand but the Fund has also bought some portable 'walls' for Head Squash Coach Emily Ison to take into schools that don't have Squash courts and the Club has sent two teams to the National Under 11 Cup amongst other things.

Thank you...                                     Alec Livingstone

It's summer time and time for another Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge on Saturday, 17 June 2017.

Covering 24 miles and 5,000 feet of climbing, the challenge takes in Pen-y-Ghent (2277ft), Whernside (2415ft) and Ingleborough (2372ft) - all to be completed in under 12 hours.  I'll never beat last year's time of 8 hours 40 minutes; under 10 hours will be fine.

Thanks to the generosity of Club members, my Y3P Challenges over the years have raised money for the British Heart Foundation.  This year I'm coming nearer to home and supporting the Club's Futures Fund, providing extra funding and facilities to encourage the Club's young squash talent.

You can support me in the Challenge and help develop the next generation of squash players by making a small donation to the Futures Fund.

On the internet, you can donate at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/alec-livingstone or look out for the collection buckets in the Bar!

Thank you...                                     Alec Livingstone

The funds raised at a recent charity event held at Ipswich Sports Club have nearly reached an incredible £3500 with further donations coming in all the time.

The event was to raise money for the charity SHINE in memory of Vinnie Barker.  The evening was a great success all round and the organiser, Vinnie's mother Jo, has expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Club Staff and The Courtside Bistro in helping to make the evening run so smoothly; click here to see Shine's acknowledgement letter.

Vinnie's uncle, Club Member Michael Eley, is cycling from London to Paris in July 2017 to raise money for SHINE and has so far rasied over £2000 - if you wish to make a donation, please visit his JustGiving page on: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/MichaelEley to find out more about Vinnie's story.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

Thanks to all the members who contributed to my Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge on behalf of the British Heart FoundationAfter the initial attempt was abandoned by BHF due to atrocious weather, it was wonderful to have perfect weather for the 2nd attempt - warm, dry, calm with perfect visibility.  That was always going to result in a good time but even so to knock 35 minutes off my previous best was remarkable - 8 hours 40 minutes for the 26 miles and 5000ft of climbing.  The good news is that I can take it easy next year - I won’t ever beat that time.  And £440.00 went to BHF.

Thank you...                                     Alec Livingstone

Thanks to the generosity of many people, including Club members, I've raised some money over the years.  This year the first £500.00 will go to the British Heart Foundation and anything over that wil go to the Club's Futures Fund.

Member's 3 Peaks Walk raises over £600 for Charity

Thanks to all who backed me on the 3 Peaks Challenge.  I managed to get round all 25 miles and 5000 feet of the three peaks in 9 hours and 12 minutes.  (It should have been 24 miles but for a slight mistake in map reading.  Without that I might even have sneaked under 9 hours!)
I have to confess that it was very hard work, made even less enjoyable by a steady downpour that lasted all day.  In fact, while the South of England was enjoying hot sunny weather, we had gale driven hail on the top of Whernside.  It was one of those days when no known waterproof clothing would have been any use.  Right now I'm not sure I would do it again, but ask me again in a month or two and who knows.
Thanks once again, on behalf of the British Heart Foundation, for your kind support.

Tennis Tournament for Elena Baltacha's Charity raises over £1k

On Sunday, 22 June 2014, Ipswich Sports Club hosted a Tennis fundraising tournament, together with a sumptuous 'Tea on the Lawn', to welcome another year's Wimbledon season starting on Monday, 23 June 2014 as well as to remember our former British Number 1, Elena Baltacha..."Bally".  In the sunny weather, along came the Tennis competitors wearing yellow outfits following Bally's wishes for her charity, "The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity".  Some came in yellow tutus and some came as Spongebob and Minions characters.  What fun we had on the day!

Organiser, Tip Flory, spoke of her memories of Bally - "I was playing Tennis in the Indoor Centre at ISC and suddenly a sound like thunder came from the far end court - Bally was training with her hitter and coach to get ready for one of her major tournaments.  The power, speed, focus she put into the training was unbelievable, like a warrior.  But sometimes I watched how she coached small children in her Academy, when her enthusiasm, warmth, fun and caring side came through.  She would always say hello with her beautiful smile, and told me to keep playing and enjoy my Tennis!"  She was one in a million, an awful loss for Tennis, but her legacy will live on".

The event raised over £1000.00 in donations for Bally's charity.  Special thanks to Ipswich Sports Club, Kingpin Bowling, Ministry of Sound London, Green Island Gardens and Tip's Thai Cuisine for their support and raffle prizes.

"FUN" Mini Tennis Tournament for Adults and Juniors held on Sunday, 15 September 2013 at ISC.

The event was organised by Tip Flory in memory of Club Life Member, Pam Rogers, who sadly passed away in early 2013.  It proved to be a huge success attracting many of the Club Adult and Junior Tennis players to compete against each other at Mini Tennis.

The event raised £750 for Breast Cancer Care and plans are in place for a follow on event next year.
