England retain European Junior Championship

Date: April 2nd 2018

England have retained the European Junior Championship for the 9th successive year - and it was the Club's Lucy Turmel who clinched the championship in the last match of the event in Poland. In truth, England had had a comfortable route to the final with clean sweeps for the team of three against Ukraine, Germany, Netherlands and Italy in the pool stages. Lucy was rested in the QFs, her place being taken by her opponent in the individual tournament, Alice Green. Another clean sweep for England against Spain and Lucy was on court again in the semifinal against Ireland. A 3-0 was enough to help the team to another final against 2nd seeds France.
For the first time in the tournament England went behind, Tom Walsh losing 3-1 to the Boys' U19 Champion. Nick Wall squared the match after a close encounter that kept the referee busy and it was down to Lucy to win the deciding rubber and retain the title. Having won the individual title a week earlier Lucy was aleways going to be the favourite but even so her demolition of her opponent was hugely impressive. 3-0 to Lcy; 2-1 to England; and the title was retained.
